One of our most talked-about recent installations is the perfect case study in how to do charcoal right. Designed by our own Goran Savic for a stylish Dutch couple embracing a new chapter of empty-nester life, this Riverside, CT kitchen is everything contemporary European design should be: intentional, beautiful, and deeply personal.

The clients had a clear vision,  a minimalist contemporary kitchen that reflected their modern sensibility, with an emphasis on atmosphere over storage. What unfolded is a space that proves charcoal kitchen trends aren't just a passing wave. They're a design philosophy.

The Charcoal Foundation

The star of the show is the Minera Kiruna Laminate in a deep, moody charcoal, a finish that LEICHT produces with the kind of precision and consistency that only German craftsmanship can deliver. The dark cabinetry dominates the space in the best possible way, creating an immediate sense of drama when you walk in.

The handleless system keeps the facade clean and graphic, allowing the richness of the color to speak for itself without any visual interruption. This is minimalism at its most intentional.

The Contrast That Makes It Sing

What elevates this kitchen from simply "dark" to truly spectacular is the contrast play. The polished White Marble Silestone quartz countertop and backsplash provide a luminous counterpoint to the charcoal cabinets, the light bouncing off the marble surface makes the dark tones below feel even richer.

Then there's the Natural Wild Oak Alpine finish, used on the layered eating counter, floating shelves, and the interior of the slide-away bar garage cabinet. This warm wood tone is a love letter to the surrounding landscape, the home sits along the beautiful Mianus River Pond, and the oak finish brings that organic outdoor energy right inside.

In this project, the homeowners chose three Moooi-style white sphere pendants that create a lyrical, almost sculptural composition above the space. These large-scale pendants do something remarkable: they introduce an element of playfulness and artistry into an otherwise clean, architectural kitchen.

Against the dark German kitchen cabinets, the glowing white spheres are nothing short of breathtaking. This is a pairing that shouldn't work on paper but absolutely does in practice, and it's the kind of design risk that separates a good kitchen from a truly memorable one.

The Lifestyle Detail

Eating in the kitchen was a non-negotiable for this couple, so Goran incorporated a wood eating counter that integrates beautifully into the overall design. Rather than an afterthought island, this counter becomes a genuine social hub, a place to have morning coffee with the newspaper, share an evening aperitivo, and experience the kitchen as a living, breathing room rather than just a place to cook.

The bar garage cabinet, a slide-away unit that conceals bar accessories while keeping the facade clean,  is another example of the intelligent storage thinking that LEICHT is known for. You get the functionality without sacrificing an inch of visual elegance.
